Tip size is one of the first numbers you'll see on any pool cue listing, and one of the easiest to get wrong. The right tip depends mostly on the size of the balls you play with. This guide explains what tip size changes, which size suits each game, and how to choose.
Quick answer: which tip size do you need?
| Game | Ball size | Typical tip size |
|---|---|---|
| English (UK) pool | 2 inch, with a 1⅞ inch cue ball | 8–10mm |
| Snooker | 2¹⁄₁₆ inch (52.5mm) | 9–10mm |
| American pool | 2¼ inch | 12–13mm |
If you play English pool and snooker, a 9.5mm tip covers both. If you play American pool, look for a 12–13mm tip.
Why tip size matters
The tip is the only part of the cue that touches the ball, so its size changes how the cue behaves on contact.
- Smaller tips (8–10mm) let you strike a precise spot on smaller balls, which helps with fine control of spin and positional play. They are less forgiving if your cueing is slightly off-centre.
- Larger tips (12–13mm) spread contact over a wider area on the bigger American balls. They feel more stable and forgiving, especially on power shots and breaks.
Using the wrong size for your balls makes the game harder: a large American tip on small English balls makes precise contact awkward, and a very small tip on American balls can feel unstable.
English pool cues: 8–10mm tips
English pool is played on smaller tables with 2-inch object balls, so English pool cues use narrow tips. Most players choose between 8mm and 10mm. A 9.5mm tip is a popular middle ground: precise enough for English pool and the same size many players use for snooker.
Our 9.5mm options include the Premier 2.0 pool cue, the 3/4-jointed Pro Series 001 and Premier 300 snooker and pool cues, and our build your own cue option.
Snooker cues: 9–10mm tips
Snooker balls are slightly larger than English pool balls, but most snooker players still use a 9–10mm tip for accuracy over a full-size table. Every cue in our snooker cues collection has a 9.5mm tip, so it works for English pool too.
American pool cues: 12–13mm tips
American pool uses larger 2¼-inch balls, so American pool cues have broader tips, usually 12–13mm. Our American-style cues include the Canadian Maple pool cue and Ultra Graphite pool cue with 13mm tips, and the Carbon Pro carbon fibre cue with a 12.5mm option.
What about 10.5mm and 11mm tips?
Tips around 10.5–11mm sit between the two standards. Some players like them for a slightly more forgiving feel on English tables, or as a compromise if they play both styles casually. The Dragon pool cue and Carbon Pro both offer a 10.5mm option. If you play one game seriously, though, it is usually best to match the standard size for that game.
Tip size FAQs
Can I use a snooker cue for English pool?
Yes. Snooker and English pool cues use similar tip sizes, and many players use one 9.5mm cue for both. Read our pool cue vs snooker cue guide for the other differences.
Can I use an American pool cue on an English table?
You can, but a 12–13mm tip is harder to control on smaller English balls. If you mainly play English pool, a narrower tip is the better choice.
What tip size is best for beginners?
Match the tip to the game you play most: around 9.5mm for English pool or snooker, 13mm for American pool. Our beginner's guide to choosing a pool cue covers weight, length and joints too.
Does the tip size change over time?
The diameter is set by the ferrule, but the tip itself wears with use and will eventually need reshaping or replacing. Replace it with the same diameter so it sits flush with the ferrule.
